Anthropic's new Personal Finance beta is read-only, U.S.-only for Pro, Max and Ultra plans — and it is chasing ChatGPT's May launch into your checking account.

Anthropic said Thursday, November 5th 2026, that Claude is getting a new Personal Finance feature that lets U.S. subscribers connect bank and card accounts through Plaid and ask questions in plain English about their own money. Access is read-only. Personal Finance cannot move, manage or invest funds, Anthropic wrote, a point repeated by TechCrunch and The Verge.

The pitch is simple: stop opening five banking apps to answer "where did my money go?" Let Claude add it up.

What happened

Personal Finance is rolling out in beta this week to Claude Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the United States. It is not on Free, Team or Enterprise, and Anthropic says the rollout is gradual.

Setup runs through Plaid. You sign in to your bank yourself, approve read-only access, and Claude never asks for or sees your banking password, according to Anthropic. For the accounts you choose, Claude can read the bank name, account name, type and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions (amount, date, merchant, category and the bank's description). You can link up to 16 banks and unlink anytime. Chats inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models.

In Anthropic's demo, asking "Where did my money go this month?" produced a categorized total of $4,309.37 USD, with more than half in rent and utilities and $1,024.51 USD in food and drink, then a follow-up on what was left before payday: $1,393.22 USD. Claude can also flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees, bills that crept up over a year, and explain terms like APR with a dollar total of interest paid.

Context

This is a catch-up move. OpenAI launched a similar ChatGPT personal-finance flow in May, also through Plaid, The Verge noted. Anthropic has already been pushing Claude into verticals such as Legal and Financial Services for enterprises; Personal Finance brings that money angle to consumers.

Plaid said Anthropic joins more than 800 AI companies building on its rails, that 69% of U.S. consumers are willing to share personal information with AI in financial services when they see a clear benefit, and that nearly two-thirds of people who connect a bank to an AI assistant through Plaid had never used a Plaid-powered personal finance app before.

Anthropic called the feature "a first step" and said bigger money decisions are still best made with licensed professionals. It invited banks, wealth managers and financial services firms to help shape what comes next.

Why it matters

Money questions are already among the most common chatbot prompts. Connecting real balances and two years of transactions turns Claude from a tip generator into a mirror of your cash flow — useful and risky at once.

Useful, because a founder or household that can ask "am I spending more than I make?" with live numbers will catch leaks faster than a spreadsheet they never open. Risky, because you are handing an AI vendor a deep look at rent, payroll deposits and late-night shopping. Read-only is a real guardrail. It is not zero risk: model mistakes and the third-party path through Plaid still sit on the table. Anthropic itself says Claude can make mistakes and that you should check important figures with your bank.

For Anthropic, the feature is also stickiness strategy in a crowded AI race. A dashboard that knows your rent date is harder to abandon than a blank chat box.

The money lesson

1. Read-only is the right default. If a tool can explain your spending but cannot send a wire, you kept the nuclear button. Demand that boundary from every AI money product you try.

2. Context beats advice. Generic budgeting tips are cheap. Answers built on your last 24 months of transactions are the actual product.

3. Privacy settings are part of the portfolio. Hub chats that stay out of training are a feature. Confirm where a conversation lives before you paste a tax refund or a buyout offer.

4. AI is a spreadsheet with a mouth, not a fiduciary. Anthropic says Personal Finance is not designed to give investment advice. Treat it like a smart ledger, then call a licensed pro when the decision can change your year.

We covered the foundations of watching your cash in Episode 4 - Personal Finance. Claude's new hub is the same job with a faster interface — the discipline of knowing where the money goes still sits with you.

At the time of writing (~5:00 p.m. ET Friday, Nov 6, 2026), Personal Finance was still in a gradual U.S. beta on paid Claude plans. This article is for informational purposes only and is not financial advice.
