Tesla Will Wind Down Cybertruck Production Around Mid-2027 to Make Room for Cybercab

Elon Musk said Tesla will wind down the stainless-steel pickup at Gigafactory Texas around mid-2027 so the plant can build more Cybercab robotaxis — a planned phase-out, not an overnight cancellation.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) will wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027, CEO Elon Musk said Friday, November 6th 2026, in a post on X. The floor space, he wrote, is needed for “increased Cybercab production,” the company’s purpose-built two-seat robotaxi.

That is a wind-down with a date, not an immediate kill. Musk did not say whether any Cybertruck work moves to another plant, how many trucks still ship through the first half of 2027, or what happens to open orders. Gigafactory Texas is the only known Tesla site set up to build the truck’s specialized stainless-steel body, NBC News reported via Reuters: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tesla-wind-cybertruck-production-years-poor-sales-markets-rcna607817.

What happened

Musk’s wording, as carried by TeslaNorth: https://teslanorth.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-wind-down-cybercab-2027/ and CNBC: https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html: Tesla “will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production.”

When a user called it an “end of an era,” Musk replied that the Cybertruck was the “best vehicle Tesla has ever made,” then added: “True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” CNBC reported: https://www.nbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html).

Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill filled in the owner question that matters most. Asked about long-term support, he wrote on X: “Yes, of course! Tesla will maintain spare parts and service will continue support,” per TeslaNorth: https://teslanorth.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-wind-down-cybercab-2027/. In a separate post, Morrill called Cybertruck “an incredible technology development platform” that “lives on through Cybercab,” NBC News reported: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tesla-wind-cybertruck-production-years-poor-sales-markets-rcna607817.

Tesla did not immediately comment to CNBC or Reuters outside business hours.

Context

Deliveries began in late 2023. Before launch, Musk had predicted annual Cybertruck sales of about 250,000, CNBC: https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html, TechCrunch: https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/06/tesla-will-stop-making-the-cybertruck-in-2027/, and NBC News: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tesla-wind-cybertruck-production-years-poor-sales-markets-rcna607817 all note. Reality never got close.

Kelley Blue Book figures cited by NBC News: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/tesla-wind-cybertruck-production-years-poor-sales-markets-rcna607817 put U.S. Cybertruck sales last year at 20,237, down 48% from 38,965 in 2024. CNBC: https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html attributed the same U.S. estimate to Cox Automotive (KBB’s parent). SpaceX spent $131 million USD buying Cybertrucks at MSRP last year, per a SpaceX filing cited by CNBC — a reminder that one of the biggest buyers was inside Musk’s own orbit.

Quality and regulation piled on. The 2024 Cybertruck was the subject of 11 voluntary recalls, according to NHTSA data cited by CNBC: https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html, covering issues from a trapped accelerator pedal risk to inverter faults that could cut drive power. In October, Tesla cancelled the Australia and New Zealand launch and refunded reservation holders there, TeslaNorth reported: https://teslanorth.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-wind-down-cybercab-2027/. Europe was always a stretch: the angular stainless design runs into pedestrian-impact rules, former Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer told NBC/Reuters.

This is also the third Tesla product cut for the AI/robotics bet. Earlier this year Tesla ended Model S and Model X production to free factory space for Optimus humanoid robots, TechCrunch reported: https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/06/tesla-will-stop-making-the-cybertruck-in-2027/. Cybercab has been running paid rides in Austin since September, with expansion toward Dallas planned, per the same TechCrunch piece — while U.S. safety regulators still have open questions on how Tesla self-certified the vehicle.

Why it matters

A mid-2027 wind-down is capital allocation in steel and concrete. Tesla is trading a niche, polarizing pickup for more robotaxi capacity at the same plant. The sales gap — 20,237 U.S. units versus a 250,000 promise — made the truck easy to reassign once Cybercab needed the line.

For owners, Morrill’s parts-and-service pledge is the near-term story. For investors, the question is whether Cybercab demand and regulatory clearance fill the revenue hole a discontinued high-price truck leaves behind.

The money lesson

1. Capacity is a strategy choice. When one product misses the volume target, the factory does not stay sentimental. Mid-2027 is Tesla choosing Cybercab over Cybertruck floor space.

2. Forecasts are not inventory. A 250,000-a-year prediction that lands near 20,000 U.S. sales is a planning failure you price into the next launch, not a branding problem alone.

3. Support outlives the line. Morrill’s spare-parts commitment is how you keep goodwill when you wind a product down — and how you protect residual values while the fleet is still on the road.

4. The AI pivot has a body count. Model S, Model X, and now a timed Cybertruck wind-down show Tesla will cut hardware products to fund robotaxis and Optimus. Watch what gets protected next.
