SoftBank and MGX joined the first slice of a round that may top out near $20 billion, well below the $30 billion OpenAI had been chasing.

OpenAI closed an initial $11 billion USD funding tranche on Friday, November 6th 2026, at a company valuation of $1.25 trillion USD, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg and Reuters. The money had been wired by Friday, Bloomberg reported. SoftBank and Abu Dhabi's MGX participated, Reuters said.
That is still an enormous check. It is also a clear step down from what OpenAI wanted a few weeks ago.
What happened
Bloomberg reported that the $11 billion USD is only the first portion of a larger round that could still grow to as much as $20 billion USD in the coming weeks. OpenAI had initially hoped to raise as much as $30 billion USD at a valuation around $1.4 trillion USD, Bloomberg and The Verge reported. Reuters separately said two investors put the earlier valuation ask closer to $1.5 trillion USD. Either way, the closed number is lower.
The scale of the prior raise makes the new mark stark. In March, OpenAI raised about $122 billion USD at an $852 billion USD valuation, The Verge noted. Jumping from $852 billion to $1.25 trillion is still a big step. Missing a $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion target in a cooling market is the part investors will remember.
Context
The raise lands in the middle of a brutal week for AI stocks and a political shift against data centers. Thursday's selloff wiped trillions from U.S. equities after midterm results that punished AI-related ballot measures and raised the odds of tighter regulation. Chip and software names partially bounced on Friday, but the message to private-market buyers was already clear: the easy AI premium is under pressure.
OpenAI's closest rival is feeling it too. Anthropic is preparing a public listing, and some investors now put that IPO closer to about $1.5 trillion USD, below earlier talk near $2 trillion USD, Reuters reported. Anthropic's own amended prospectus this week showed about $895.4 billion USD in compute and infrastructure commitments, a reminder that frontier labs are raising cash because the bill for GPUs and data centers is enormous.
OpenAI had already delayed a near-term IPO. CEO Sam Altman has said the company is prioritizing safety claims before going "guns blazing" toward a public listing, The Verge reported, while also warning that waiting too long would be "kind of bad for the world." Private capital is the bridge in between.
Why it matters
A $1.25 trillion USD private mark makes OpenAI one of the most valuable companies on Earth without a public ticker. It also locks in a price that later IPO buyers will use as a floor or a fight. If public markets keep punishing AI names, that mark becomes a negotiation problem. If the bounce sticks, it becomes a springboard.
For founders and operators, the signal is simpler. Even the hottest company in tech can have its ask cut when sentiment turns. SoftBank and MGX still showed up. The round is not dead. It is just smaller and more selective than the summer dream.
What to watch next: whether the remaining capital fills to $20 billion USD, how Anthropic's IPO prices against this private mark, and whether OpenAI's next public comments on an IPO timeline change after the midterms.
The money lesson
1. Raise when you can, not when you must. OpenAI delayed an IPO and still pulled $11 billion USD. That only works if you have leverage and a product buyers still want. Most companies do not get a second chance after a failed ask.
2. Valuation is a negotiation, not a destiny. Dropping from a $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion ask to $1.25 trillion still leaves a historic outcome. Founders who treat every mark as permanent usually get stuck.
3. Capital intensity changes the rules. Labs with hundreds of billions in compute commitments are not raising for vanity. They are raising because the cost of staying in the race is now measured in tens of billions a year.
4. Follow the second check, not the first headline. The $11 billion USD is closed. The story is unfinished until the rest of the round either fills or stalls.
