AMD's AI chip business just posted its best quarter yet, landing in the middle of a three-day chip sell-off that had pushed the Nasdaq 100 into a correction. The guidance is the bigger story.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) reported third-quarter results after the bell on Tuesday, November 3rd 2026, and beat Wall Street on almost every line that mattered. Revenue rose 45% to a record $13.38 billion USD, and adjusted earnings came in at $2.09 per share, according to the company. Analysts polled by LSEG expected $13.09 billion USD and $1.95 per share, per CNBC and Reuters.
Shares jumped about 8% in extended trading. CNBC put the move at 8% and Reuters at more than 8%, after Investing.com first reported a gain of more than 7%.
What happened
The engine was the Data Center segment, home to AMD's EPYC server processors and Instinct AI accelerators, which brought in a record $8.55 billion USD, up 97% from a year earlier. AMD credited strong EPYC demand and the launch of its Instinct MI450 Series GPUs. Reuters said analysts were looking for about $8.20 billion USD. Data center now makes up 64% of AMD's revenue, up from 47% a year ago, CNBC noted.
The rest of the business was mixed:
- Client and Gaming: $3.72 billion USD, down 8%. PC chips (Client) grew 7% to $2.9 billion USD on Ryzen mobile sales, but Gaming fell 40% to $773 million USD on lower semi-custom and graphics revenue.
- Embedded: $1.1 billion USD, up 29%.
- Margins: adjusted gross margin was 56%, up 2 points from a year ago. On a GAAP basis, AMD earned $2.43 billion USD, or $1.46 per share.
"We delivered a record quarter with revenue exceeding the high end of our guidance as Data Center segment sales nearly doubled year-over-year," chair and CEO Lisa Su said in the release. "Demand for our Instinct and EPYC products continued to strengthen, and we expect growth to accelerate further in the fourth quarter as we scale Helios and 'Venice' production."
The guidance is the real headline
For the fourth quarter, AMD expects revenue of about $17 billion USD, plus or minus 3%. At the midpoint, that's roughly 66% growth from a year ago and about 27% more than the quarter it just reported. Analysts were at $16.23 billion USD, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters and Investing.com.
The one soft spot is margin. AMD guided adjusted gross margin to about 55%, down from 56% in the third quarter and roughly in line with the 55.3% analysts expected, per Reuters and CNBC.
A big part of that ramp is Helios, AMD's rack-scale AI system built to compete with Nvidia's. AMD said Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure are already running models and workloads on the first Helios racks, built on MI450 Series GPUs and 6th Gen EPYC CPUs.
Context: a rough week for chips
The timing matters. A gauge of U.S. chipmakers fell about 12% over three sessions through Monday, and the Nasdaq 100 closed more than 10% below its October 6 peak, entering a technical correction, Bloomberg reported in coverage also carried by The Economic Times. The worry is whether the hundreds of billions being spent on AI data centers will pay off. Intel's weak forecast last week helped set off the slide, according to both Reuters and CNBC.
AMD wasn't immune to the sell-off, though the stock has still more than doubled this year, per Reuters and Investing.com. It also wasn't the only AI hardware name to deliver tonight: networking company Arista (NYSE: ANET) reported third-quarter revenue of $3.66 billion USD, up 58.5%, per its release, and its shares rose more than 6% after hours, Investing.com reported.
Why it matters
The sell-off was a bet that AI spending is about to slow. AMD's guidance suggests its biggest customers are still spending more, not less.
There's a fair caveat. Free cash flow was $554 million USD in the quarter, down from $1.53 billion USD a year earlier, per AMD's release and TradingKey. Building toward a $17 billion quarter takes cash up front.
The money lesson
1. Guidance moves stocks more than the past quarter. The beat was nice, but the $17 billion USD outlook is what the market reacted to. Investors pay for where a business is going.
2. Sell-offs don't grade every company the same. Chip stocks fell together on a broad fear. One report showed it doesn't apply equally to everyone. Know what you own and why.
3. Mix is everything. AMD's gaming revenue fell 40% and the company still posted a record quarter, because most of its revenue now comes from data centers. Leaning into your fastest-growing line can carry a weaker one.
From the podcast
In Episode 30 - Moving Markets, we asked what moves the stock market and individual stock prices, and who is buying and selling at any given time. Tonight's swing, from a three-day chip sell-off to an 8% after-hours jump on one report, is a live example.
What to watch next
Whether the after-hours gain holds when regular trading opens Wednesday, what management says about Helios and MI450 supply on the call, whether free cash flow recovers, and whether this report steadies the broader chip index.
At the time of writing, AMD shares were trading higher in extended trading after the report, and the company's earnings call was scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET. This article is for informational purposes only and is not financial advice.
